Here’s Sarah’s Story
“My name is Sarah and I am an addict in recovery. Addiction is not a choice I made, it’s a disease I live with. I used to be ashamed to admit this, but today I’m very grateful.
Back in August 2021 I was battling my addiction alone, depressed with suicidal thoughts and I couldn’t see a way out. I was leading a double life, trying to hide my addiction from my loved ones and my work. It was exhausting.
By coincidence I saw an advertisement on Social Media for a new charity opening up in Lichfield called Better Way Recovery. I plucked up the courage to email the founder, Pete, to ask for some advice. Shortly after, we met, and I was told Better Way would soon have premises in Lichfield. All staff members have personal experience with addiction. There’s no judgement, they are there to help, support and advise.
As soon as the premises opened, I would pop in between work whenever I was free. BWR supported me throughout the reduction of my medication which I’d been on for years. I’d tried to do this alone numerous times and failed, but by having the support and encouragement of the team I’m now substance free. I’ll be 9 months clean on November 13th.
I owe my life to BWR.
It’s my safe place, where I can talk to like minded people who understand my struggles and have lived them. There is no other place like BWR. We are one big family and I’m now lucky enough to volunteer. I love helping others, giving back and sharing my experience and hope with others.
There’s no other centre locally where people struggling with substance misuse can go without an appointment and get the help, support and advice that BWR gives. I’m so grateful to be a part of this amazing charity that changes lives. It’s certainly changed mine. I’m the happiest I’ve ever been. I have freedom and peace in my life today and choices. These are all gifts of recovery that BWR have enabled me to reach.”
