Why Not Become A Volunteer?
Volunteering
Our lived experience of addiction runs right through the spine of Better Way Recovery. Our Founder, Trustees and our volunteers have all been affected by addiction. We believe this experience is vital when helping and supporting others on their Journey. No one knows or understands an Addict or an Alcoholic more than another Addict or Alcoholic!
“Without Volunteers, we’d be a nation without a soul” –Rosalynn Carter
Volunteers are the life blood of this charity. The Empathy, Compassion and understanding our volunteers show can make all the difference. The therapeutic value that’s comes from helping someone who is going through what you have been through is without parallel. We encourage, welcome and embrace people who have had past struggles with addiction. We understand those people may have lived difficult lives, but we also understand the importance of “giving back” to society and others, and how that helps that person heal.
Better Way Recovery welcomes anyone who wants to offer their time to volunteer, not just people who have survived addiction. Our whole purpose is to get rid of the negative stigma of addiction and bring the community together! There are many benefits to volunteering that helps that person grow as an individual including:
- Gaining in confidence
- Making a difference
- Meeting people and making friends
- Being part of a community
- Learning new skills
- Taking on a challenge
- Having fun… and many, many more!
All our volunteers will be Enhanced DBS checked as they will be working with vulnerable adults and potentially delivering awareness talks in local schools. This is standard procedure and Better Way Recovery will treat every individual applying with the strictest confidence.
(please note: If you are in recovery from drug or alcohol addiction there is an abstinent clean time requirement of 3 months to volunteer for Better Way Recovery.)
Volunteer Roles
There is so much diversity to the Better Way Recovery Service, which means there are many different aspects to our volunteering opportunities.
We have a drop in centre open on 6 days of the week, we offer a peer mentor service, we go into schools to do awareness talks, we work with other agencies doing outreach work, we help support the families and we deliver solution focused groups at the centre.
All our volunteers will be inducted and trained to ensure compliance with all relevant safeguarding and other important policies, including Health & Safety, Confidentiality and reporting procedures.
